Being from the east coast it's always nice to see some great companies come from there. Cue Nova Scotia Fisherman, a small natural skin care line from New Minas, Nova Scotia. Every product they make uses sea kelp harvested from the surrounding shorelines. Sea kelp has been used in Nova Scotia (and other east coast areas) for centuries for many domestic purposes and also for its health and beauty benefits. So it's no wonder it's used in their products as it's anti-aging, stimulates the skins ability to heal and helps to soothe dry skin. I got the chance to try out some of their collection and my thoughts are below!
My favorite product from the line is the Sea Kelp Lip Balm. It's super hydrating and 93% organic. It's made with jojoba oil, sea kelp, coconut oil, vitamin E, rosemary leaf oil, among other good stuff. The scent is super light (slight citrus, slight herbal, slight coconut) but it's totally fine for a guy who doesn't like much of a smell. The packaging resembles a small pill bottle and is wider than a regular lip balm so it's great for quick coverage. The push-up bottom makes it easy to use but one thing I noticed is that there isn't any extra space inside the cap so if you push the balm up too high and then put the cover on you'll smoosh product on the inside of the cover. It's a simple fix by pushing down the balm in to the tube before closing. If you like a lip balm with a aromatic experience, you're in luck. The lip balm also comes in sea salt n caramel!
At first touch the Hand & Body Lotion is quite silky and luxurious. The feel is more premium than the packaging would suggest. The formula is handmade with 100% natural ingredients including sea kelp, shea butter, sunflower seed oil, pumpkin see oil and aloe leaf juice. For $11.95 the price is right for what you're getting.
I won't lie, I'm a soap person. I always reach for a bar of soap over a body wash...always.
The line has four soaps to choose from: apple cider, seabuckthorn and shea, fennel and bayberry, and Fundy clay and mint. The soaps are handmade and have that 'homemade' feel. the scents are lighter than the names would suggest so if you don't like heavy smells these would be great.
The Rescue Balm is the Fisherman's Friend version of a body balm. You know it's going to be effective but it comes with a strong scent. The balm uses raw ingredients like chamomile, sea kelp and aloe extract (and lots more) that are great for you skin. The scent of the balm comes from ingredients like tea tree oil, lavender and rosemary. I do like the scent, it's comforting, but it's a bit strong so if you're sensitive to smell it might be a little aggressive on your nostrils. I've been enjoying it on my hands and heels and I think it (along with the lip balm) have found a home in my bag!
